While it was not shocking that Beckham was headed to MLS (this had been widely rumored for some time), the dollar figures involved were staggering. There has already been much criticism that the league overpaid for an aging superstar, and experts have already started drawing comparisons to financially disastrous NASL of the 1970's and 80's. However, as he showed in last year's World Cup, Beckham the player still has plenty left in the tank, and a quick look at the source of his salary reveals why this isn't economic Armageddon for the league.
